Tinubu Directs Security Chiefs to Rescue Abducted Persons and Secure January Elections

After a security meeting at the Presidential Villa, the Defence Minister said agencies were told to clear remaining bandit camps and protect voters.

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the heads of Nigeria’s security agencies to rescue all abducted persons and ensure that no terrorist or bandit camp remains in the country, the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, told State House correspondents on Thursday, October 15. The minister spoke after a security meeting chaired by the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to the minister’s briefing, the President also asked service chiefs and other security heads to guarantee a safe environment for Nigerians to vote in the general elections scheduled for January.

A crowded security agenda

The directive comes during a busy period for the security services. In recent weeks, troops and police have announced several rescue operations in the North-West and North-Central, while communities in parts of Plateau, Oyo and other states continue to report attacks and abductions. A Nigerian Air Force transport aircraft also crashed in Ondo State earlier in the month, an incident now under investigation.

Security analysts say election seasons typically place extra strain on manpower, because personnel must be deployed to polling units and collation centres in addition to ongoing operations. Coordination between the military, police, the Department of State Services and civil defence will be central to the plan.

Key points

  • Directive: rescue all kidnap victims and dismantle remaining bandit camps.
  • Elections: agencies asked to ensure a safe environment for voting in January.
  • Announced by: Defence Minister Christopher Musa (retd.) after a Villa meeting.
  • Context: continuing attacks and abductions in several states.

Watching for results

Civil society groups and families of abducted persons have long called for faster rescues and clearer communication. Observers will be looking for measurable outcomes in the coming weeks, such as the number of victims freed, arrests and prosecutions, and visible security arrangements for the electoral calendar published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
