Actress Nkoli Nwa Nsukka Begins Traditional Marriage Rites with Chukwudi Onuorah

An Iku Aka, or 'knocking', ceremony was reportedly held at her family home in Nsukka on October 11.

Nollywood actress Rachael Okonkwo, popularly known as Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, has reportedly begun traditional marriage proceedings with businessman Chukwudi Onuorah. According to reports, an Iku Aka ceremony, often translated as “knocking on the door”, took place at her family home in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

The groom’s family delegation, including his mother and other relatives, was said to have visited to formally introduce their son’s intention to marry. No date has been announced for the main traditional wedding.

Understanding Iku Aka

In Igbo custom, marriage is a union of families as well as individuals, and it unfolds in stages. Iku Aka is usually the first formal step. The groom’s family visits the bride’s family with drinks and kola nut to state their interest. If the bride’s family is receptive, further visits follow, during which families get to know one another and discuss expectations.

Later stages typically include the settling of the bride price and the list of items requested by the bride’s family, followed by the Igba Nkwu, or wine-carrying ceremony, where the bride publicly identifies her husband by offering him palm wine in front of the community.

Key points

  • Couple: Rachael Okonkwo (Nkoli Nwa Nsukka) and Chukwudi Onuorah.
  • Ceremony: Iku Aka, the formal introduction, on October 11.
  • Location: the bride’s family home in Nsukka.
  • Next steps: further rites leading to the Igba Nkwu; no date announced.

Relationships and tradition

Many young couples today combine customary rites with church or court weddings, and some choose to compress the stages into fewer events because of cost. Relationship counsellors often encourage couples to use the early family visits as a chance to discuss finances, family expectations and future plans openly.

Background

Nsukka, home to the University of Nigeria, is known for its strong communal traditions, and family ceremonies there often draw large numbers of relatives and neighbours.

Fans of the actress have sent congratulatory messages as they await news of the next ceremony.
