Donald Trump sacks US Secretary of State hours after visiting Buhari

Tillerson’s tenure as as secretary of State was marked by a series of public disagreements with Trump.

America’s president, Donald Trump has announced the end of Rex Tillerson’s tenure as US Secretary of State just hours after the diplomat’s visit to the Villa to meet with president Buhari.

Trump made the announcement Tuesday afternoon via his Twitter.

“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!” the president said.

Tillerson’s tenure as secretary of State was marked by a series of public disagreements with Trump.

Tillerson had said on his visit to the Villa yesterday that the US government was ready to render assistance to Nigeria in the search for the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls.

He told Buhari: “You have our support in your challenges. We will also support opportunities to expand the economy, commercial investments, and peaceful polls in 2019.”
