Needing a win after losing their opening game 2-1 to Niger, the Eaglets fell behind and could only find a late equaliser through Abiodun John.

Cote d’Ivoire and Niger progressed to the semi-finals from the group. Because the zonal tournament doubles as the qualifying route to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria will miss the 2027 continental championship and, with it, a chance to qualify for the next FIFA U-17 World Cup.

A familiar disappointment

The result extends a difficult run for a team that once dominated youth football. Nigeria has won the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times, more than any other country, and the Golden Eaglets were long seen as a production line for senior internationals. Missing out again has prompted calls from former players, coaches and fans for a review of how youth teams are scouted, prepared and supported.

Key points

Final group game: Nigeria 1-1 Cote d’Ivoire.

Opening game: Niger 2-1 Nigeria.

Nigeria’s goal: a late equaliser from Abiodun John.

Consequence: no U-17 AFCON in 2027 and no route to the U-17 World Cup.

Record: Nigeria are five-time U-17 world champions.

What needs to change

Common suggestions include longer preparation camps, more competitive friendlies, stronger age verification, and closer links between the national youth teams and domestic academies and clubs. Coaches also point to the importance of continuity, so that promising players are tracked from under-15 level upwards.

Background

The WAFU-B zone brings together the West African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria and Togo. Only the top teams from the zonal championship qualify for the continental tournament, so a single defeat in a short group stage can be decisive.

The Nigeria Football Federation is expected to review the team’s campaign in the coming weeks.

Photo: Unsplash (illustrative).

A 1-1 draw with Cote d’Ivoire in Ouagadougou was not enough after an opening defeat to Niger.

[5
56,61,119,120
post-116","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports","tag-football","tag-golden-eaglets","tag-u-17","tag-wafu-b
["GET
