Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress conducted themselves in a not so civil manner during their recent invasion of the MTN office.
NLC, it appears, want staff of the telecommunications company to be a part of the union, but would rather be brutish about it than make the staff see worthy reasons why they should be members.
The officials proceeded to picket the MTN office on Monday and descended on members of staff as they were chased out of the building. Properties worth millions were also destroyed in the process.
If the labour union, indeed, wants to ensure that the staff of MTN become members, it could have approached the matter in a more responsible and civil manner. The staff who were beaten by the NLC officials are tax payers who deserve to be treated humanely, and not to be treated as common criminals.
NLC as a body responsible for fighting for workers’ rights needs to get its priorities right, and ensuring that the Federal Government review the minimum wage is a good place to start.
