Acclaimed British stage and screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart, globally recognized for his iconic portrayals of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film franchise, has died at the age of 86.
According to an official statement released by his family, Stewart passed away at his Los Angeles home while under the care of his wife, Sunny Ozell. The family revealed that his death followed a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
In the wake of his passing, Marvel Studios confirmed that Stewart had completed filming scenes for the upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, which will officially mark his final on-screen cinematic appearance and his ninth time portraying Professor Charles Xavier.
“Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans,” Marvel Studios stated in an official tribute.
With a career spanning over six decades across classical theater, television, and major motion pictures, Stewart earned numerous high-profile accolades and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his exceptional services to drama. He is survived by his wife and two children.
