King Charles III has warned artificial intelligence executives of the “existential dangers” of advanced AI technology falling into the wrong hands.
Speaking at an AI summit held at Dumfries House in Scotland, the monarch highlighted the risks posed by rapidly advancing frontier AI models. He cautioned that such systems could develop dangerous capabilities if not properly controlled.
King Charles urged executives from major AI companies, including Nvidia, OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as government officials, to prioritise keeping technology in the service of humanity rather than allowing it to advance unchecked. He called for the development of a shared set of guiding principles to govern the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
At the same event, Nvidia’s CEO emphasised that AI safety must remain paramount, while DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis noted that artificial general intelligence could arrive soon and would have a massive societal impact comparable to the Industrial Revolution.
The King’s intervention adds a high-profile voice to growing global discussions about the need for stronger safeguards around the development and deployment of powerful AI systems.
