Former US President Barack Obama has said American voters want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, reacting to projections that the Democratic Party has won control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 US midterms polls.

Obama made the remarks in a post on his official X account (formerly Twitter) on November 4, 2026. According to projections, Democrats gained about 25 House seats and 7 Senate seats, with final tallies still being confirmed.

“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face.”

Obama credited the result to candidates who stepped forward across the country, including in areas once considered long shots. He said they came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.

He also thanked the people who ran the vote. “We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election,” he said, describing their work as one of the most essential functions of democracy.

Looking ahead, Obama noted that the current administration still has two years left in office, and said Democrats should use that period to act.

“Our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.”

His message presents the outcome as a public call for unity and practical problem-solving, and urges supporters to pursue policy changes while building toward future elections.

The final composition of the new Congress will be confirmed as vote counting concludes.
