Vice President JD Vance has attributed the Republican Party’s losses in the 2026 midterm elections primarily to the war, stating that many voters who supported Trump and Vance in 2024 switched their support to Democrats this year.

In a detailed post on X on Wednesday, Vance explained that while Republican voter turnout was generally solid, the bigger problem was vote switching. He revealed that internal data showed Republican voters were showing up, but a significant number of former Trump supporters chose to vote for Democrats instead.

According to Vance, a pollster who accurately predicted the scale of the loss found that many Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to support Democrats. When asked what would make them return, the leading reasons were ending the war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, putting America First, and changing the relationship with Israel.

Vance said the core reason for the defeat is clear. “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

He rejected calls for amnesty as a solution, describing those promoting it as dishonest, while remaining open to changes in enforcement priorities such as targeting businesses that hire illegal labour.

Vance acknowledged that economic messaging could have been stronger but maintained that the war remains the central issue. He called for an honest conversation about the party’s future, starting with recognition of why the losses occurred, and urged supporters to channel their frustration into electing Republicans who share their worldview.
